... one in Shiloh. When I re-read Shiloh recently it reminded me of another story where the main character lives in a house built into a hillside overlooking a river and the approach was landscaped to make attack difficult.

I think it was a different story because:

The MC employed a chef who was upset when asked to produce burgers and pizza for a party for local teens;

There was an attack and the effectiveness of the defences was proved.

Can anyone identify the other story?

Have I remembered scenes from an earlier edition of Shiloh?

It is similar to parts of William Redman Carter by Lazlo Zalezac.
