Main character has been convicted of a crime in the future and sentenced to military service until death. He has survived much longer than anyone has expected while fighting in an endless war.

It's a Ka Hmnd (Kenneth Hammond) story, but I don't have the time to look it up right now. "The Private" seems to stick in my mind, so that may be it.
