I am looking for a story I read a long time age. Not sure where (SOL or ASSTR). MC lives out west in the wilderness. He is either an assassin or government spook. Someone wants to kill him or the girl he is protecting. There are underground chambers and weapons storage. One tunnel leads to a second house.
All help greatly appreciated.

I think you may be thinking of Mallard Heir, but that's not out west, it's in the Appalachians, so I don't think it's the story the person is looking for. The violent conflict in it is when the MC gets involved with a local girl the local bully is trying to force into being his girl, and they get into blows about it. Also, the second house is built to hide the existing tunnel when it's found.
This may be what he's after, but I'm not sure.

This particular stories tunnel goes from the house to a remote garage that has a get away vehicle in it.
Is it a straight spy story or is there weird things going on.(Just read that what a strange sentence.) I remember a former agent who is now a blacksmith with hidden weapons who can form a "bubble" - a shield.

The series consists of 3 stories on SOL (4 on FineStories). In the first story the MC starts hitchhiking west the summer before his ninth grade. He stops a bank robbery, goes on a bull riding circuit (and wins the junior category). The later puts him in contact with a famous actor and he ends up going to Hollywood.
At the end of book 1 on SOL (book 2 on FineStories) his family get a house like the one described (with a secret tunnel).

If it helps, in one scene the house is attacked by a helicopter gunship. MC and girl escape down tunnel and use get away vehicle.
I know that there isn't much there to go on, but that is what I remember.

Does this story begin with a man who lives in an isolated area rescueing a badly beaten woman who was thrown from a vehicle onto his gravel driveway in th middle of th night in freezing weather?
As I recall he has the ability to access a bubble that saves them when his home is attacked.
Now you have me searching my files. It seems this was a two part story of two stand alone parts. Argghh! I hate not remembering!

The one I am thinking of, and can't remember the title or by whom, has the daughter as the MC who lives with the grandmother after the father disappeared. escape tunnel from house to garage where the escape vehicle is an old school muscle car. It takes place in the mountainous area with mining a major element. She has an old sports car she likes to drive to the limit. there is a returned marine as a love interest who rebuilds military humvees. a crooked sheriff with a fancy truck he puts snow tracks on. lots of action and explody stuff...

That's the story I've been trying to remember the name of. I don't recall ever reading the sequel.
I will look at Runner, It is not the very good Ashley series. I have read the whole series many times.

The girl may have even been placed in the MC's care for protection. Not sure about that.

I did not mean to start that big of a search, but looking at all of the suggestions is fun. Most I have read.
So far none of the suggestions are the right story. Anim8or is so far describing the story I remember. Unfortunately he has CRS and can't remember the name.

Well you did say it might have been on ASSTR. I haven't spent any time there in over a decade. From what I have heard they have been having issues and finding things is getting more difficult.
If you have bookmarks, or visit ASSTR via FTP, its still working. their database/web server is pretty bjorked tho.
