There's also another story I know of I'm trying to find where I guy comes across a murder of US Marshalls and he saves the witness, but the killers have a man inside the US Marshalls who try to set him up as the killer - is that the one you're thinking of? I'll post a link when I can find it.

I think it's the later one, he got prosecuted cuz of some lazy prosecuter who wanted to get a raise or something. so he run away to the mountains.

With luck someone else will remember it. The closest i can think of at this time is one where a computer guy who had served in the Army at one time was working in the mountains when his wife and daughter were murdered and he was framed for the murder when he came back from the mountains. Very long and involved major corruptions by the time it was sorted out. However, that story Ashes for Ashes was pulled many years ago. I know Mike is working on a revised version to prepare it for reposting.
