From what I can remember the main character was serving a lifetime sentence in the Military instead of Prison and everyone that was like him were called Lifers. He was one of the first and had been enhanced with nanites. He has been serving this sentence for the last 20 or so years from what I can remember. This story is based in the future on a spaceship.
