Can't remember much but the story starts with a guy stopping a girl from jumping off the golden gate bridge. They end up travelling together and make friends with a family. The girl ends up a relative/daughter of the family... the man gets a job with them.

"Something like that" would be Saralinda by Gray Beard. One of those stories where the mc is a genius and unutterably wealthy.
