Take her or we will kill her....

The Demon Whisperer

I read a story sometime back where the line 'take her as your slave or we will kill her' was used maybe it was written exactly like that or differently. What happened is a woman challenged a guy to duel and lost, then her tribe or the people she lived with told the man that since she challenged and had been bested, she was either to be killed or taken as a slave by him.

I can't recall whether I read it here or on Lit but any help would be appreciated...

Seems I remember a cmsix style time travel story that had a scene like this. The MC was the traveler and the woman was one of the better hunters in her tribe and thought she could take him.

"Wizard Tremain" has something similar. In that story the elves that are friends with humanity have a taboo against elves using magic. Magical elves are either killed or bound as slaves to a human. Since non magic using humans have much shorter lives than elves this is considered a fate worse than death.

There is a challenge to be fought but that does not involve the female elf in question.

has a scene where there is a challenge for the control of the destiny of a magic using elf

Exactly what I remember too, just no author just remembered he had to go to proving grounds to become an adult tribe member. His choice.

@burlarr

I know how irritating that is... I can remember that part but not the author nor the title...

No duel in that one, just a commercial transaction which ended with 'if you don't buy her, we're going to cut our losses with her'

I know a possibility, but there are significant differences.
The duel I am thinking of was between a man and another man's woman. It was to the death and she won.
His widow had to be disposed of and the winner's man pretty much had to take her as a slave.
It is the *second* story in this sequence and - as you can see - unfinished.

It's not the one I'm looking for but it sounds good (even though it's unfinished). Thanks, I'll check it out...

If it is the cmsix style time travel story, I believe the woman was larger than most native men and would not become the mate of a man who could not beat her. The MC used some judo or some other martial arts to beat her.

I don't recognise that plot in cmsix's world, although it comes close to a subplot in Roger Zelazny's (dead tree) Creatures of Light and Darkness.

It may not be one of cmsix's stories, but one of the many that were 'inspired by cmsix'. I remember reading it here as I haven't read any dead tree publications in ... let's just say a LONG time.
