Check if this is the one. I know I read it recently, but I read so many westerns it's hard to be sure which is which now.

It may even be this one - Escape from Lexington

It's not escape from Lexington. That starts long before the Civil War, and he's from Kentucky. Also, he goes home and invites the family to come back with him.
It might be 'The Way West' by Woodman one, but it starts in 1862.

I'm pretty sure I know the story you mean, and I read it in the last few months, but I also read about 50 westerns in that period, just trying to narrow it down.
If it's the one I think it is he regularly runs into bandits and gets rich from the loot he gets off them.
Well *that* sounds like something from aubie56.
I know, but Aubie is mostly 1860 and later, and since the original poster specified before the war I'm cut anything that lists the war or later, and not finding much right now. I suspect the story he's after actually starts right at the start of the war, but not sure.
The best match for pre-war and a Virginia start I can find is

I think it's what he's after, but it's not quite what he asked for.
there are so many that start between stories 1860 and 1870 - but he's after one from before the war. I'm sure I've read it, but can't find a title to aprk a memory.
The closest I can find to a pre-war match, right now, is

Run away it is Thanks
Arrrgh, that's the first one I suggest way back when!
and it's set in 1862 just after the start of the War Between the States!
