I recall a story in which the main character, a male, took a date out to bowling, and ended up getting destroyed because the girl was actually the state champion or something like that.

It may have been a do-over story, where the second time through he didn't do the bowling date.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

In rlfj's A Fresh Start in chapter 14 there are two students asking out the same girl. The hero wins because she loves bowling(she's wearing an Oyster Bay Rollers jacket)

While 'Bowling for Hearts' is a great story, even if it is and probably always will be unfinished, I am sure the one you want is 'A Fresh Start'. Carl finises the other contender by suggesting going bowling (having noticed the jacket) and they have a great time. When he takes her home he discovers that she was a champion at her former home town.

I'm curious as to why you say 'Bowling for Hearts' is unfinished. While it leaves plenty of room for a sequel it does appear to be complete.

I had it in my head that it wasn't finished yet. I just reread the last chapter, and yes it was completed. I also read Rare Dreams blog entry where he was trying to clean up BfH before continuing to work on BfH2. That we written ten years ago, so I doubt that there will ever be a BfH2.
