In the end of May there was an update to the Author's agreement where if an author's account has not signed on in the past 5 years their works would be put behind the "premier" wall.

Over 80% of the stories that are premier were placed there for that reason. There are a number of authors who might not have posted for over 10 years but since they come here to read their accounts are still considered active.

Too bad that is was some of the highest quality works on the site. New folks aren't going to be able to read the quality stories, and who going to pay for it when the available examples are more garbage than good?

That change only applies to writers whose accounts have been inactive for 5 years.
As long as someone logs on under that account regardless of what they do. The stories will remain in the free area. I know of at least one who's work will probably remain free for some time even though he is dead. His son uses his account from time to time to browse or read on the site. Keeps his stories from hitting the archive listings.

It was a judgement call. I am sure that laz spent a long time making that decision. Only time will tell if it actually helps or hurts the site.
