I think Rudyard Kipling wrote a novella about both of them titled "The Man Who Would Be King".
Perhaps I owe an apology for hijacking this thread without contributing anything to the OPs request.
I can't think of any stories I'd recommend, but Techno Cultivator by Noddy (incomplete) has an amoral protagonist and its score has crept up to 7.38.
