A youngish woman is given the gift of reading minds, but only temporarily, maybe for one day. A fairy godmother may be involved. She learns that her fiance doesn't respect her, and that a guy she's thought of as a friend forever is deeply in love with her. She breaks the engagement and goes for the other guy.
One detail -- she and the new guy had kissed once in the past, and it had "knocked her socks off". At the end, they kiss again, and this time it "knocked her pants off".
I read this long ago, probably the first time on the long-defunct tale.com, but I think I've seen it elsewhere since. The title may have been "Cassie's Wish".
