Looking for a story I BELIEVE I read here some years back. Man is sent to alternate reality where magic is real. He steals money for rich bully with the help of an urchin and then sets up a school(?) or refuge? up on the hill. In the end he fights a great evil. It wasn;t short and may have spanned several stories. Hope that's not vauge enough!
