@jimq2
cmsix had a remarkable imagination.
I was living in San Antonio at the time, 08-09. Chessley was living in a single wide on the SE side of Austin. This was as he was recovering from his open heart bypass surgery and before he gouged one of his big toes that eventually turned to gangrene and forced the amputation of his foot. And that lead to his last years in that damned care home in Atlanta TX.
IIRC he had a blog or somewhere that he posted rants and pics. We exchanged a half dozen emails and he was just as much of a rascal as many of his characters. He needed a computer and I had one that I'd have given him if he wasn't so picky. But he did not want it.
One of my regrets of those years is that I did not drive the 40 miles and visit.
But… my impression is that as wild as his imagination was, many of his main characters were just a facet of his complex personality.
I believe Chessley did work as a log truck driver hauling pulp wood from Arkansas to paper mills in northern Louisiana. I think he had CB radios with MEGA-watt linear amps. I believe that he did work for the steel mill that made oil pipes. I believe he did a lot of hunting and fishing. I believe he did interact with horses.
Did he actually go to Alaska? I've not a clue. But it is possible that would have been one of his ultimate trips.
And yes, most of his tales start off 'ok' and then devolve into pure silliness. But he lives on here on SOL. May he continue to rest in peace.
