Probably not what you are looking for but in Peacemaker Wars by J.N. Chaney, the grandfather of the main character is a WW1 veteran who becomes a well respected interstellar peace keeper, and lives a long life as trips between galaxies slows down vs real life… course this is from a 2 year old memory so I might have some hallucinations on the details…

The closest I can come to that is a WW2 soldier - I think he was in tanks - who turned out to be a god.

Problem is, I simply can't figure out HOW i would have read it.
If you have a local library, you might be able to get it as an eBook. My library shows a few titles of his works.
