School report needed. Neighbour has the books needed.

zitqhile ๐Ÿšซ

Oyster50 asked about a story last month. It strung a memory of mine about a similar story, he was asking about.

The story I remember the beginning of is about an apartment renter with a large/decent collection of books.

A young girl(12 to 15) needs to write a report for class. I think it might do with whales maybe, but science for sure.

The girl is either the landlords daughter or a neighbour from a close apartment.

The male neighbour has the books needed for the report, so the girl gets to spend time in the apartment using the books. The mother knows(landlord or other neighbour).

The girl gets good marks for her report, then my memory disappears of the rest of the story.

Quite sure the man and the girl do not get married per Oyster50 stories, but think stuff happens.

I am thinking of a short story of only a few chapters, but might be wrong on that also.

Non of the stories suggested on Oyster50's post seem to match.

I recall the story, and I was midway thru it (I start new stories belatedly) and it ended abruptly mid-story (I never saw a conclusion at least). Presumably, either the author pulled the story or โ€ฆ

It wasn't a single report, instead the girl's parents couldn't afford to support her, so she starts visiting her older single neighbor (his wife had died and he never dated again), who allows her to read his large collection of books and in exchange, she starts cooking and cleaning for him (pseudo-wife), and inevitably they fall in love.

Something happened to her family, though I can't recall what, however they were leaving and not coming back so they signed papers, granting him the rights to act as their surrogate, realizing the direction their relationship had eventually taken.

It was a decent story, but obviously, I have no idea how it ended, so I'm guessing the author quit the site (after the new, temporary age-restriction or he left for some other reason (pissing off Lazeez?)). Actually, it was one of my favorites (I've always been a romantic at heart), so if anyone recognizes it, I'd love to at least learn how it ends (though being a romance, it's fairly easy to guess).

The guy was older and middle-aged (50+) and the girl was a young promising teen (14).

That sounds like the story or a very similar one. Hopefully someone else will have a better memory than both of us.

Certainly sounds like an Oyster50 story. Maybe Neighborly (the original version that later became Neighbors here on SOL).

The story I am thinking of happen in an apartment building. Neighbours/Haley stories happened on a rural section. Forget right if male MC or Haley lived in a mobile home nextdoor. It is very similar to Oyster50 type of story. I think the family leaving might have happen after the school report part, but the report was the beginning of the story in the first couple of chapters.

There used to be a story on AssTr called "Neighborly" (by Oyster50 of course) and it introduced Haley (the neighbor) and Deena (his daughter with his ex-wife, and I think a DNA test showed that she was not related to him).
Haley was 12, not sure how old Deena was at that point. Haley's parents went off to a Nascar race, leaving her with the MC (Bill). They never came back, the funeral was a few days later. I looked for the word "report" and it was in chapter 3, and they lived in houses close to each other rather than apartments.
That version of story very definitely failed the "minimum age 14" restriction, https://storiesonline.net/s/69929/neighbors appears to be a rewrite to get around that. Haley's parents were definitely very short of money and I think she more-or-less lived with the MC in both stories.

Oh, and the "Haley and Deena" who appear in some of the other Smart Girls stories have to be the same ones.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the one I recall is Oyster50's "Neighbors". So I'm guessing zitqhile's thinking of was another similar story, so likely a non-SOL story.

Or there is Kimberly and Dana, both in the Smart Girls series by oyster50. They both start in an apartment and the MC helps with homework.

I do not remember much of the story, but do get the feeling the girl was smart but not in Oyster50's "smart girl" range. More of just regular smart. Quite sure the story was slightly similar to Oyster50 stories, but also quite sure it was not one of Oyster50 stories. I am rereading his older stories to make sure.

I'm about 3/4 of the way through rereading his work for the fourth or fifth time. Trying to think about who writes similar stories. The Neighbors in 3-b by Openbook is a 5 part series.

@zitqhile

Maybe one of the Dorsai stories? Originally on Asstr.

He used to post some good stories on ASSTR.

I have his stories downloaded from way back when, and there's a definite candidate there.
"Next Door Neighbor", and the girl (Robyn) is 12. I can't see any books involved, he lets Robyn use his computer and word processor, and laser printer. She visits him more and more frequently, getting closer and closer. You can guess how she celebrates getting an A+ on that report. The mother goes away for a couple of days, leaving Robyn with him.

It's a long story (1 MB) and I stopped reading after her mother got back, so I don't know if her mother moved away. I was maybe 1/6 of the way through the story at that point.

Books were a main/beginning point in the story I remember. The male MC has a decent amount of books the girl needs for a school/class report/project. For some reason I forget, the girl could only use the books in his apartment, not take them to her place. Maybe younger siblings that might damage them, or a quiet place to work. Oyster stories usually have books for reading after the two MCs get together or some help with homework.

@zitqhile

Then it was not NDN.
The copyright was from 2004 and I think I read it back then, one chapter and interminable.

@Dinsdale

Yep, that one sounds familiar (the one I was mentioning). But a lot of the story takes place after that initial "few days", as that's when they finally consummate their previously intellectual relationship and after the girls parents finally accept the relationship.
