@techgradFWIW,
"The Valley" is listed on the author's personal web site for $5. It is under the "Advanced Reader Copies" tab, available in Mobi, ePub, and PDF formats:
Rory Walsh is a boy with a problem. His mother has just passed away, and his abusive alcoholic aunt is trying to take custody of him because she thinks his mother had money.
In steps his father, who Rory has never met, to rescue him. Rory is taken from his home and friends and moved to The Valley, a gated community in Summerlin Nevada, just outside of Las Vegas. He discovers that his father is loaded, and he will be moving into a home in which ten of his old one would fit into easily.
He also has a new stepmom who looks like she could be an actress and a stepsister who hates him on sight.
This book is intended for mature audiences.
The author also has the story listed for sale on ZBookstore for $10. It is not marked as ARC or anything, just listed. The ZBookstore site makes stories available for online reading (one big HTML page) or downloadable EPub, or mail-to-kindle (which I think is mobi format, but I've never gotten this to work -- it is not any kind of priority for me).
The story may be available on AMZ or some other website. But since they take the attitude that you are leasing the works, rather than buying them, I tend to avoid "committing" to electronic copies from them. Either send me a CD or DVD or paper book, or let me get it via KU, where I know I'm just renting the IP for a short window.
