What I think I can remember is the football player (I think quarterback) gets forced out/leaves a college team and joins another think the college he joins wears red. The fans aren't happy and all show up wearing his jersey when he comes back with his new team to play them.
Parts of your description sound similar to Jay Cantrell's The Outsider, but it's been a while since I've read it, so don't quote me on that...

Sounds like G Younger's Stupid Boy and the continuation, AA Better Man series. The college part where he ends up "red shirting" is in the Better Man.
Pretty sure it's the Path to Glory story. AJ is playing for Kentucky when a new coach takes over with a cocky son who wants AJs QB position. AJ and several players transfer to Alabama and come back to stomp a mud hole in Kentucky and even the home Kentucky crowd is cheering for them because of the dirty way the coach treated them.
