I remember reading the story years ago. A man stops a mugging in Minneapolis (?). The victim is an African immigrant, and gives the man a stone that has some special powers.

I know the story, and (assuming I'm right) I can add some more details.
The protagonist had been married into a rich, manipulative family in or near Virginia. He wanted to marry one sister, but was tricked / coerced into marrying the other. Wife and her father conspired to blindside protagonist with divorce and firing.
The stone's magic lets him go back in time and try to fix things, but its unpredictable. It takes him several tries to get it right.
Using the stone involves rubbing it. Right before and after the transition. his eyes do something weird, like his pupils rhythmically dilating and contracting.
An apt title in that case, which is why it's so easily remembers, once those long-forgotten details are revealed. It too was an odd, yet intriguing story.
