Young boy has a friend who has a curio/antique shop.
Friend is murdered.
Boy and his dad go to the shop and the police are there investigating.
In a hurry to leave the shop the boy teleports himself and his dad away.

If I recall it correctly, as it's been a while since reading it, the boy picks up a curious antique Chinese trinket, which is what teleports them. Then he proceeds to figuring how precisely how it works (it had an imprisoned soul in it, which would work with whoever was using it, as long as they treated the trinket well, rather than abusing it for their own ambitions (i.e. it would voluntarily help, unless the owner was a complete ass, then it would withhold ANY helpful suggestions)).
An intriguing premise.
