I really can't remember anymore than the name of Perseus, and was sci-fi.
I think the MC was born on a "heavy" planet. He's stocky but strong. An orphan. He's human, but a heavy planet variant. His people are VERY family oriented, but he grew up solitary which is shocking to on older lady he meets at some function. Became an orphan due to some Space War.

That is indeed the story I was looking for! I just finished reading A Terran Trader from Toolando, which had Perseus in it, as in a pepper paste. That jogged my mind to wanting to read Privateer again, Pericles/Perseus must be a word association trigger.
Yeah, not having read it in a LONG time, that one seems to match the story I recall, as it best matches the description rather than the title.
I vaguely recall another story in which a heavy-worlder attends a mining engineering course on Earth and falls for fellow student. Unfortunately I can't remember the title or author and the name Perseus doesn't ring a bell but it was a good, well-written story :-(

Most are references to the Greek hero Perseus, or the Perseus Arm of our galaxy.

I've read all of the Neo Viking series by VR. That series, to me, was on par with Alan Dean Foster's Pip & Flinx series. At least as a sci-fi coming-of-age, continuous world building series.
when I read the topic "perseus" 1st thing I thought of was "perseus paste", a very hot and spicy paste in A Terran Trader from Toolondo

I JUST finished reading A Terran Trader from Toolando for the umpteenth time. Which is what made me want to read about the sci-fi heavy variant human. Specifically because of the "perseus paste" lol and I'm on a sci-fi theme atm.
