A long time ago I read a story in which a man was flying his family in a small, single engine I think, airplane. On approach to the airport in a major US city a strange updraft/downdraft brought the small aircraft into contact with an airliner passing above. Air traffic control alerted ground emergency services to a lost private aircraft until the jet was seen to have the small plane impaled on the nosewheel.

All survived and media attention helped the man's career.

It may have been on usenet before I found SOL. Can any knowledgable person provide a title or author I can search for?

Cannot help with the story, but would like to read it to see how all survived. An airliner would grind a small plane down to nothing before it stopped on a runway, unless everything was absolutely perfect. Even then, the weight on the nose wheel at stop would probably crush a small plane, in real life. Fiction might be better.

I vaguely remember that incident, but have only been able to find one incident involving an airliner and a private plane with zero fatalities, and the other details do not match.

I vaguely recall such a story… thought it was a Daniella Steele novel but can't find any such story among her writings… then I thought about Micheal Crichton's Airframe… but that is about a faulty sensor… best I can come up with is 16 Souls by John J. Nance (dead tree) where a heavy passenger plane overruns a smaller commuter plane in a Denver blizzard…. Pretty sure that's not the story the OP is looking for… still trying to recall where I remember reading this….
