I'm looking for a story where the main character comes into conflict with the UK police, who kill his slaves and try to kill him. He ends up in control of many slaves, and the other slaveowners will resent him if he just frees them,not that they _can_ be freed without years of retraining. He ends up rich, and basically living in France. That's what I can remember at the moment.
