OLD lottery story

akarge ๐Ÿšซ
Updated:

Probably from 15 to 25 years ago. A guy buys a lottery ticket after talking to a waitress. (Or possibly she buys it. Not sure) He had recently broken up/gotten dumped by his GF, or wife. Anyway, the ticket wins and the ex tries to get him back. He had lightly made a promise to the waitress to split it. Don't remember much, but they "lived happily ever after".

More romance than stroke story. I searched for lottery on SOL. None of the six that popped up.

Edit
Oops. That was just the ones with lottery in the title. Checking the rest now

Sounds a little like the plot of a Nicholas Cage movie from the 90s. IIRC the title was It Could Happen To You.

Possible, but I don't think so. I really feel that I read it. Possibly on that other site.

I seem to remember reading something like that but drawing a blank right now. Let us know when you find it.

Seem to remember there used to be several stories about winning a lottery but not so many now...

There's a long story from ages ago named Castles in The Sand by Deana Johns. The beginning starts off like that where a guy running from a cheating wife? buys a lottery ticket. He wins and buys a old missile silo and starts collecting a harem.

"Castle in the Sand" (not castles) if you go looking for it. It's not on SOL. I think the original was under the alias D.J. 'Doc' Pedersen or D. J. Pedersen.

There's a link in this thread where you can find it.

...more likely under Deanna Johns, or possibly Thaumaturge; a Google on the quoted title and Deanna gives a first-page find in .txt (then you've got to
trim the filename from the address to get the directory for the rest of them)

Ok, so I managed to download Castles in the Sand and I am reading it. It is NOT the story that I was looking for, but thanks anyway. ๐Ÿ™‚

I am sure this happened in real life, in the USA. It was a long time ago and CRS is really a problem now. It would be interesting if anyone can remember if I am correct.

'Inspired by a true story'. The cop, waitress and lottery win are real. Both the cop and the waitress were happily married to others, the cop's wife went with him to give the waitress the good news about the win.

@Radagast

Thank you. When you read about the film in Wikipedia there is a bit at the bottom of the page telling about the real life event and naming the people involved.
It makes me feel a lot better that my memory is not completely gone, YET.
