Hi,the hero - possibly an archaeologist - travels back in time 10,000 years or so and takes over a tribe in North America. He later finds he's immortal and takes over the world.

Probably not the same at all (it was only 1500 years, the MC is not an archeologist, etc.) but some of the elements remind me of Spirit Quest by FantasyLover.
I've read this one I think. But can't recall the title or the author.
It's a series of about three books I think. He starts as a flint rock maker and in the third book he's negotiating with a spider like alien over something.
You might be right, it did get a bit wishy-washy towards the end and I vaguely remember him being called to make extra-terrestrial peace or something.
I seem to remember one where the mc went back to aztec or mayan times, then "invented" things that moved them forward...thought it was a howard faxon or denham forrest story but none of their story descriptions rang a bell...
Yeah, he conquered the whole of America with some airships or planes before he went on to greater things. The scene where he is found to be immortal is him rolling down some crater of sorts and walking away.
Thanks everybody for trying
As soon as I read the description I knew it was the one I was thinking of! Didn't think for a moment it was an Aubie story though!

I do an advanced search for clovis, i can never remeber the name or author but the theme is tied to clovis in my head.
Yes, the MC in A Close Call earns his way into the first village by making Clovis points and other knapped goods, which he had taught himself to do during down times on archaeological digs
