That immediately made me think of aroslav and his Strange Art stories, but what would they have to do with 'past lives'.
It might still be by aroslav because I believe he uses artist/sculptor combos in more than one story/series.

ok thanks for letting me know. I remembered micro/macro paintings and mc being able to and helping another artist who mc rented space from or rented space to with statues so I thought it was. Plus it was the only one in my history that was close lol
Will be interesting to find out which story cause I'll want to read it :)

In past lives the MC does rent a studio, he does paint micro/macro subjects. In one of his lives, he was a blacksmith, so he knows how to work with a forge to help another artist. This all occurrs in the first few chapters of the story.
past lives should be it. read a few weeks ago and main characters best friend forges sculptures from metal. main character paints and goes on almost annoyingly about the macro in the micro or some such (not much for art speak myself but w/e). paints bacteria and such while going on about the similarities to the universe on the macro scale.
