Thank you! That is the story I was looking for. I skimmed the first couple chapters on my search but, while looking like a good, read didn't seem to be the one I wanted. Skimming a few chapters further proved ya'll right so, again, thanks.
I know it's not what OP was looking for, but doesn't 'Emend by Eclipse' by Lazlo Zalezac have some similarities?

I read the first few chapters of 'Emend' a couple years ago. I don't remember much, just that something about the story irked the heck out of me.Now I see many people who like it so maybe I should try it again.Might have been in the wrong headspace at the time. Heaven knows there are many books and movies I didn't like that I loved on rewatch or reread.
Of course it has worked the other way as well.

I got that problem with a few of the newer do-over stories and lost interest in them even though they are highly rated and the category is one of my favorites.
Comes down to different strokes for different folks. No pun intended lol
