I am trying to remember a story I read here on SOL and can describe the general theme and ending twist but can't remember title, author, or details (other than that twist). I may even have accidentally mixed up 2 different stories.
Can't remember if this is Do-Over, Time Travel, or other genre...but MC is given access to something that allows him and anyone he trusts to see the future, but limited to something like only 5 or 10 years. He is to use this to try and prevent a supposed apocalyptic future war. I don't remember hardly anything else except the twist at the end. The MC had become suspicious of the "assistance" he had been given and secretly set some genius hacker friends to trace the communications (think they came in through email or messaging system) to try and discover the source. Turns out the source was an alien race wanting to conquer Earth but, not wanting to deal with the highly warlike state the nations of Earth were in, they decided to send messages into the past to try and create a more peaceful Earth in the future so that their conquest would be easier. It initially looks like they succeeded only to have them quickly defeated by the MC and his friends who had discovered the plot and made plans to counter it.
