Help! I'm trying to write my first story but it's based on an old TV series I can't find any information on. It was a Highway Patrols type show but not the one with Broderick Crawford. I remember it as based in Arizona and John Cameron Swayze was the host. One episode concerned robber posing as Highway Patrol officers to pull over cars to rob them on lonesome dessert roads.

I did a google search on that actor's name with "imdb" proceeding it. It didn't look like he did much and there wasn't an AZ Highway Patrol series listed. Looks like he was more a narrator than an actor.

I think this might be what you are looking for.

Highway Patrol is a 156-episode action crime drama series produced for syndication from 1955 to 1959. It was "one of the most popular syndicated series in television history",[1] and it was the first American series broadcast in West Germany on that country's commercial TV channel.[2]

Highway Patrol stars Broderick Crawford as Dan Mathews,[1] the gruff and dedicated head of a police force in an unidentified Western state.[citation needed] Mathews had "no particular title โ€” just the boss," Crawford said.[3]

Thanks to both Switch Blayde and Dominions Son. First, yes he was the narrator and host, not an actor. He hosted from what looked like a high end lounge of some sort and from there he'd do his famous Timex commercials. It wasn't the Broderick Crawford series as he'd already been fired for his drinking problems and the CHP had stopped helping due to his numerous DUI's. Plus, IIRC, this was in color. I'm thinking it may have been part of the anthology series he narrated.

You are probably remembering an episode of Armstrong Circle Theater.
You might look at the long list of episodes on IMDB but I don't think any of the episodes exist anymore.
