Forum: Lost Stories

Slightly OT, but looking for what I think is a movie.

SF or maybe post apoc. MC is a boy who is a Good forager. Seaside. Everyone is in rags/scruffy clothes. And that's all I have. I just have the barest memory. No actors names
No plot info.

There was a story on here that sounds sort of similar...

Scrounging, especially on the river front at low tide, (London (Thames river)?) was an accepted occupation. A good scrounger could make a decent living recovering and selling goods.

No clue who wrote it, just that memory bobbing to the surface. Thought I would add it in case it helps jog any one else's memory.

Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

There was a movie of it.
The book was better.
London at that time period looked post apocalyptic compared to what we are use to.

Thames scroungers were called Mudlarks. The activity is Mudlarking.
Wikipedia has an article on it, with a list of cultural references including a movie, several books and TV shows. Akarge may find his answer there:

I encountered some mudlarks while hunting for gastropods at low tide on the tidal reaches of the Thames. I possibly qualified as one myself ;-)

II've never read them, but Tedbiker's Devastation Diaries series may have what you're looking for.

I don't think that's a movie.
If we're looking for a story here then Fick Suck's https://storiesonline.net/s/48527/grains-of-sand comes fairly close. He also wrote https://storiesonline.net/universe/362/family-volentin (5 stories) which have some elements of what is being requested.

It's just an image In my head. Pretty certain it is a movie.

Could it have been something made for the small screen? If so then we need to know what country you're living in because a BBC or ITV product may not have made it across the big ditch.

Don't limit this to English language productions. The German TV crime series Derrick was shown worldwide in dubbed versions. Australia aired it in the German version with English subtitles, but English-dubbed versions ran in India, Kenya and Uganda. In the UK it was aired in some ITV regions. In South Africa it was dubbed into Afrikaans, in China into Chinese, in Italy into Italian and in Hungary it was dubbed into Hungarian. A French-dubbed version ran in France and Cameroon and a Persian-dubbed in Iran.
The series was aired in more than 100 countries, but never made it to North America, nor AFAIK to any Spanish speaking country (I checked the Spanish Wikipedia entry and it seems to be a translation of English entry, citing no Spanish speaking country.)

Way back in the 70s my family lived in Peru for a few years. There were several British shows, translated into Spanish, that played on local television. I don't recall any US shows, but I was very young so that may be incorrect.

The two shows I recall being available are the Wombles and "Ultra Sieta" (Blake's 7). Years later when trying to explain Blake's 7 to Canadians not only did no one recognise it, but most thought I meant Battlestar Galactica (1978).

boy who is a Good forager

Well if you drop the boy part could it be the Kevin Costner movie Waterworld (1995)
