I read this story 12-15 years ago IRC. It was a long story, I am thinking several books. The fellow was a MD and his wife and daughter where killed in car wreck. IRC the other driver got off scot free. He joined the Army and was flagged as you could not make him show any emotion, almost a robot. Turns out he was a super skilled shooter with any weapon. Special forces and all. Was over in the sand box and would sneak out of camp and go "hunting". He starts to have mental flashes/powers. He attacks a enemy camp and his mental powers make them think is the very devil himself. He rescues a couple of soldiers and gets them back to safety across a desert. Heat, lack of food and water, wounded, he starts to talk about religious things/powers etc. When he gets back to base the Army thinks he has had a break down so they discharge him. I do not remember what he did next. I do know his second wife cheated on him. I remember his children inherited his mental abilities. He did not trust anyone, even his kids with his powers so he "bound" the kids so theirs" were limited.
The only really strange thing to help remember it is the ending. His powers just drive Muslims into a killing rage against him. He goes to the Holy land and is killed by a mob with him as some type of martyr.
Once scene that stands out in my memory is while his in the Army he and his superior officer are in a police station on Army business. Some huge guy starts fighting several officers and they can not subdue the fellow. The guys gets a gun and starts threating people. The main character tells the police he can stop the fellow. He is told to do so. He just stands up on his chair so he can see of the dividers and shot the with one shot to the head.
