Pre-Hollywood Era, when movie making was based in New York

PotomacBob 🚫

I read a novel many years ago. Do not recall the genre for sure, though it could have been a mystery. I don't remember the plot or the characters. What I do remember is the setting. It was in the early days of moviemaking when the movie industry was centered in the Queens borough of New York City. I don't actually know that Queens was ever a center of movie making, but it was in this novel. I don't know the name of the novel or the name of the author. I doubt with so little to go on anybody can come up with the title or author, but so many people on this forum have done so many times before, and I thought I'd give it a shot.

I don't know the novel in question, but I do have a suggestion and some info related to your question.

It is true that the early movie studios were mostly in New York, although I've never seen anything saying they were centred in Queens. Edison's studio was in West Orange, New Jersey; Thanhouser was in New Rochelle, New York; The Biograph Company was in Manhattan (Broadway at 13th St); and The Victor Film Company was in Fort Lee, New Jersey, which at one time was the most popular location for exterior shots among all the NY-based studios. There were others, of course, this was just what I can recall easily.

Suggestion: If no one here knows, try the reddit group r/whatisthatbook/. There are a number of librarians and other book nerds among the regulars.

Fort Lee was the home of a number of studios - Fox, Champion, Goldwyn and a number of others that formed Universal.

I used the title of the post as a search and found https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_(miniseries)#:~:text=Hollywood%20is%20an%20American%20drama,Jim%20Parsons%2C%20and%20Patti%20LuPone.

It seems to have everything you're looking for.
