The main character is a female. The portion I remember is with her being in the army and being on temporary duty with a group in South America. The unit was fighting drug traffickers or rebels, not sure which. In one segment they come under attack and she slips out and terminates the attackers.
I thought of that one and I'll look. I hesitated in doing that as I thought the MC had paranormal abilities.

Not Kelly The division she commands goes to Central Ameria to interdict drug traffic, but it's only mentioned a couple of times and not a part of the story.

In thinking about the story a bit more, I believe the MC was in South America as part of a ROTC summer activity.
It almost sounds like the end of Black Coffee's Gunny and Lenore. She's a Navy ROTC student at UC working with some SEALs in Central America. But there's no attack. In the previous story, Sparks, her future sister-in-law who's in the Army deals with some prescription drug smugglers near the border in New Mexico.
