Hello, I am trying to find a do over I read a while ago. The main part I recall is the MC stealing someone else's idea for their experiment. The experiment involved burning cigarettes to collect the tar in some cotton to show how bad smoking is for you.

Definitely rlfj's "A Fresh Start". The cigarettes/cotton/tar is quite memorable.
The story is truly a magnum opus, so this scene is in the first 10-15% of the book, and explores the MC's early science credentials (he gets a paper citation or two out of it, I think, from undergrad papers, plus a co-authorship with the head Phd in charge as well) as well as exploring his girlfriend's basement when her parental units aren't home.
One of the best stories on this site. I can't count the number of times I've read it or it least parts of it.
The epilogue reads more like a continuation. I don't care what it's called, it was good. Funny thing is, I remember just thinking what normal troops would think of some of the MC's actions (eating with troops, etc.) and the "second" epilogue actually kind of wrote itself. I've wanted to write other stories since then, but my story ideas tend to be kind of grandiose and I don't think my talents are up to it.
