It's quite an old story I think and was well regarded at the time.

Yes. This is indeed the story I was trying to find. I am at the age when memory starts playing tricks with you. The start was not at all what I remembered but I have now read far enough in to trigger enough memories to actually remember most of the story now. Very odd.

Putting that together, that sounds like something from the era 1933 to 1945, I had no idea that the SOL site was up and running back then.
Lol. I can see now that my story description was pretty rubbish. A combination of useless autocorrect, poor memory, nonexistent proof reading and fat fingered typing.

That was my second choice, but in SQ the MC marries into royalty, whereas in Proleator the MC inhabits the injured body of a prince, satisfying the 'son of the chief' requirement. Both good stories, I'm rereading SQ right now (having interrupted reading Feral Lady's Castaway series)

One final comment from me. I have just finished both Proeliator and Spirit Quest and realise that the story I was looking for was Spirit Proeliator Quest :)

If you liked both of those stories, you might want to try Cast in Time Book 1: Baron by Banadin. It's available in full on Bookapy, and is being published as a serial on SOL. It's about 2/3 published at this point on SOL, and he's posting a new chapter every Thursday. It's a good read, I think you'd enjoy it.
The author is named Ed Nelson, although he is actually an Earl. I do not know why his SOL works are by "ban a din" which indicates his desire to limit loud noises.
