An older story of some length. A young man, I believe named after the General, is a student at Gettysburg College. He goes back home to Texas and meets a divorcee who works for the family ranch. He acquires minas and learns to drill water wells, among other adventures.
I think it was written by a guy who actually taught at GC. We emailed several years ago, but he had cancer, so perhaps he is gone.

Kappa Alpha Fraternity House 4:30 pm Saturday, Halloween
John Edward Ball, pledge named Jeb, a tall lanky Texan, walked across the foyer of the fraternity house. He checked to make sure the pledges had cleaned everything from the party the night before. After the Parents' Day football game, KA hosted a reception for the parents of KA and Delta Gamma members at the KA fraternity house. (Sororities weren't allowed to have houses at Gettysburg.)

what is minas and how does one acquire it?
Smart mouthed kid says minas is a tower, as in Minas Ithil and Minas Tirith, but I think in this case it should have been mines.
Minas are young women of Hispanic descent who come to the states as housekeepers/bedwarmers.
