Hidden magical community, subtle magic

JoeBobMack ๐Ÿšซ

Trying to remember a dead tree book I read... decades ago. It had a community of humans with unique powers - mental? magical? Anyway, I remember a mother gently stretching a girl's dress so it was longer. And a teen boy wondering what he could do with one of the new Air Force jets, thinking he could probably take it to the edge of space. That's about it. Any ideas?

Wow! Thanks! I'm constantly amazed at people who can remember details about books. So much just gets mushed together in my head, and it's getting worse. And, I would have sworn the stories were by a much better-known author. Wow!

Zenna Henderson, the author, was American and died in 1983, so copyright extends the standard 70 years after her death. These stories won't come free of copyright until January 1st, 2054.

A collection of her stories called Believing: The Other Stories of Zenna Henderson was published in 2020, so clearly there's still some market for her. Whether anyone is going to do anything about "free" ebooks that are floating around, I don't know.

Many thanks. I will look in the public libraries that I belong to for ebooks (or even books :-)

We were talking about Zenna Henderson's People stories and Dicrostonyx wrote about their copyright (therefore not on Gutenberg). The sentence I quoted above is about "free" (=pirated) eBooks from pirate sites like Genesis.

BTW, The first six stories, tied together by the narrative of Lea, were published by Doubleday as Pilgrimage: The Book of the People, in 1961. The next stories were tied together with the Assembling idea after being rearranged into the People chronological order, titled The People: No Different Flesh, and published by Doubleday in 1967.
Ingathering โ€“ The Complete People Stories of Zenna Henderson, NESFA Press, 1995, contains all 17 People stories, including one (Michal Without) never published before.

AFAIK, only print editions, no eBooks except pirated versions.

HM.
