SOL story about 2 people who are trapped by a cave in into becoming earth observers so that an alien does not have to. Their fix is not all human so they are told they must remain within a specific compound. They are given an AI, money and a replicator hopefully to keep them happy. Things happen and eventually they grow their compound larger, buy more land and try to provide other a viable future.
