Get rich quick - very old story

PotomacBob ๐Ÿšซ

This story, dead-tree, is set during the times when banks had blank deposit slips in the lobby and you could write your own account number on the slips and use them to deposit money.
Maybe some banks still use them, but I haven't seen any of them for years.
In this story, about all I remember is that the main character used those slips to fill in a bank account number (not sure if it was his own), then when other people who came into the bank used those slips and, unknowingly, deposited their money into his account, he grew rich. I believe, but am not sure, that he then transferred the money to some overseas place that was untouchable by U.S. government.
I thought it might be a Paul Erdman book but I went through his novels on goodreads and not one of them rings a bell.
Anybody have a clue?

First, I do not know this story.

Second, Those slips are still used in banks all across the US.

Third, What PINHEAD uses a pre-filled form for deposit?

I apologize to microcephalitics and their families for the third comment. They are not as cognitively disadvantaged as the people in the story.

"Wow, this is a full service bank! They've already got the account number filled in for me!"

I think Richard Pryor stealing all the fractions of pennies in Superman III was more realistic, and that was not realistic.

Most check packs for a checking account come with deposit slips that have your name and account information pre-printed on them . You also typically get a book of deposit slips for a savings account, same deal. These aren't sitting at the bank waiting for you, they are in your possession.

Actually, many banks have blank deposit slips at a counter where you can fill out your own, or if you're out, use the blanks. I've read newspaper stories of people trying this on several occasions. They always get caught but not always right away. The most successful left the boxes where you enter your account number blank but used their own account number for the machine read code at the bottom.

The fractions of a cent scam has also been done in real life at least a few times. The over and under rounding are expected to even out but when they don't the software gets a real close examination.

I don't dispute that.

That doesn't do anything to negate that you can get pre-printed deposit slips with checkbooks and for a savings account.

There is less than nothing abnormal about such pre-printed deposit slips unless someone was suggesting you can pick up one at the bank.

This check is also done by software. The cheating programmer can easily change the code for these checks too. Those who don't are the ones that get caught.

Entrapment, 1999. Sean Connery, Catherine Zeta-Jones, attempt to heist 8 billion at the turn of the new millenium ... some cool stunts on Kuala Lumpur's Twin Towers and the cleanest KL tram stations I'd ever seen ...
