50s - 60s Scifi

Lazeez Jiddan (Webmaster)

Received the following from a member on Scifistories.com:

During the '50s or early '60s, one of the mainstream science-fiction authors like James Blish or Poul Anderson penned a story about a company making super-heavy elements in a nuclear reactor. In the story, the reactor suffers a "China Syndrome" type of accident and the chief scientist, a bull-headed, disagreeable person, manages to survive by sealing himself in a radiation-proof container.

Does anyone remember the name of this novel and/or the name of the author?

I read the story, I don't remember the title, but I do not think it is the one listed.

What I remember of the story is the company was after a weed killer that had an extremely short half-life. They were afraid that the process would create an extremely rare and unknown dangerous isotope.

I hope that will help find the story.

The story this reminds me of is Nerves by Lester del Ray.

Thanks Laz, that is the story that came to mind when I read the original post.
