If I am remembering correctly the main character steps into a cave and falls through the floor into another world where magic works and finds that he is a wizard. He then proceeds to undo a lot of evil magic, freeing a lot of magical creatures and destroying some evil magicians.

Thanks, that appears to be the story I was looking for. Looks like I mixed parts of 2 stories together. Aging brain strikes again!
