Been re-reading wagons ho and it reminded me of another similar story than I cant seem to find.
Also, cmsix and FantasyLover had a few stories featuring the Oregon Trail or similar plots.
Stand in Time by Ernest bywater had the MC help a couple of kids return to their tribe after family killed. might be what you remember?!
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check them out. the way I remember it, the indian boy was shooting arrows from above and they returned fire and he was either hit or fell and broke a leg. they kept him untill he was healed and returned him.
I don't think it's Finding Peace. IIRC, the boy wasn't rescued by a wagon train, but by a single teenager and I don't believe he was injured by the teenager. The thing that would probably stand out about that story the most is that it's a time travel story and it was unfinished on Celtic Cowboy's death.
There's a scene a bit like that in the latter part of https://storiesonline.net/s/16029/community-service-the-prequel by https://storiesonline.net/a/The_Blind_Man except that "Wagon Train" is an exaggeration, more like a Wagon Train of One.
Just a thought: a significant number of aubie56's stories are westerns involving wagon trains.

I fell through by the old guy
spoke to Leaping Fox's father, "This is Leaping Fox, your son. He is of the Oglalla Sioux and is not white. His hair has been cut to show sorrow for his inability to defend his sister from several men. His fight was worthy of any warrior. He was hardly alive from his battle when I found him, and you can see his major wounds are in the front as a warrior's should be. To be defeated by overwhelming odds is no disgrace as long as you have struggled to the end. Can you think of a warrior who could have lasted alone against such odds?"
A Trilogy by The Old Guy that is Premier members only and sadly incomplete.
Book 1: I Fell Through
Book 2: A New Life
Book 3: What the Future May Bring which is incomplete and inactive.
