Sound's more Quantum-Leapish than Ground-Hog-Dayish.
Ground Hog day had one person repeating the same day over and over as himself, not jumping into other lives.
It's pretty far into the story where it happens...but he jumps back to a soldier at Pearl Harbor on the morning of the surprise attack by the Japanese. He, realizing what day it is and knowing a bit about the battle, manages to get some automatic crew-served weapons up on a hillside in the direct path the Japanese bombers are going to take. He is accompanied by 2 female officers, a general and an aide to the general. The general and aide were going to be filming something on the base so when the attack started they started filming the MC and his defense of the base. Over several hours he managed to totally destroy the entire Japanese bombing squadrons sent as well as taking out several squads of Japanese that tried a ground approach to take him out. In recognition, he got promoted and assigned to secretly search out, capture, and interrogate a bunch of spies. After the war is over, he ends up basically setting up Military/Federal Intelligence and eventually ends up in the White House (again). This is the only life he jumps into that is outside his normal lifespan/range...and also the only life that he lives out fully. He dies of a heart attack after something like 25 years or so in that life and then jumps ahead back into the normal lifespan/range he normally jumps in.
I just looked it up... Book 14 (and the 1st couple of paragraphs of book 15) of Second Chance covers that period.
