This story and what I remember is from at least ten years back. I think the MC was sent back in time to Mississippi during the large plantation days. The town was built on a hill, at the bottom was the river. The more money you had the higher up the hill you lived. He made a lot of improvements on the plantation including dredging mud from the Big Black River to improve the soil. He won a plantation in a dual where he killed the owner of a neighbor plantation.
