How do I pronounce "mercs" as in mercenaries? Even tho English rules would suggest "Merks", it seems wrong.
Thanks!

it's not wrong as far as I'm concerned. That's the way I pronounce it and everyone I've ever heard say it...
I've always heard it pronounced as murks - like murky with the 'y' dropped and an 's' added. the 'er' in mercs rhymes with the 'ur' in fur while the 'cr' sounds more like an 'x' than anything else.

Me too. And that goes for the cars as well. And the Belgian(?) cyclist.

I've always heard it pronounced as 'Merk' and nothing else. Ernest is the first person who I have ever heard pronounce it as something else. Even Deadpool calls himself a 'Merk' in the movies...

Written different but they sound the same: หmษrk
Merc is singular, mercs is plural. The emphasis is on the 2nd and third letters with the 'e' sounding more like a 'u' than you often hear. Thus the 'er' in merc would rhyme with 'fur' or 'per' or 'purr.' However, there will be variations due to the speaker's accent as I've heard some Europeans make it sound more like 'mark' than anything else.
I've heard the word said by people from the USA, UK, Indonesia, Thailand, and France with it sounding like 'murk', but a few people from middle Europe have said it more like 'mark.'
Accents vary in every country. Especially the states. I can see someone from Texas or thereabouts pronouncing it Murk.
I guess it depends upon how you pronounce merc - are you saying merk like you would said mare, with the e sounding like a in air? I've always heard and said it like lurk - so murk. Deadpool is the merc with the mouth, after all.
How about mercy? Would that be merky?
Or Amerkan (American with some strange pronunciation). Merc can have other ways it is pronounced depending on the word it is in. Even Mercenary doesn't have the K sound instead of the C.
