Story, free start, pay to finish.

Kaveman ๐Ÿšซ

Have been reading Runner's High by Lorn Skye. Nice story and, fairly well written. When I got part way through ch 10 it stopped and I have to pay to finish it.
Why?
If free reading to begin and no warning that you cannot finish it, how is this allowed. I wouldn't have bothered looking at if I knew.
If an author requires payment then none of the story should be available for free access.

If that is how it is here on SoL you need to send a message to Lazeez via the contact form as that is a bait switch play that's against the rules - item 6 in the list below.

I just checked the story, and it seems complete with an epilogue at the end of chapter 10 - you may need to just reload the chapter and get a full download of it.

Does this site not allow a certain amount to be read before a paid membership is required or an authors account to be had? Could it simply be that you 'used up' your free allowance?

Free members get to read 50 stories per day as web pages. They don't get to download complete stories as epubs / txt / Mobi, nor do they get to read stories marked Premium, for those they only get a teaser, usually the first chapter, subsequent chapters are partially available. OP obviously read nine chapters then got caught on chapter ten when it went to Premium. A paid membership, even the cheap 30 day membership would allow him to finish the story and download it and all his other favourites as e-books.

@Radagast

even the cheap 24 hour membership

I didn't know we had that!

The alternative is a pay-per-download for non-premium members to get content not available on Bookapy in epub format. Some readers might prefer that. A sort of SOLapy ;)

Further proof of fading memory / old age. Edited and corrected. At least I get to read great stories for the first time, over and over again.

The author has marked it Premium, for paying members only. This makes money to support the site. He has also put it on Bookapy, which makes money for him if you choose to purchase it.
This is not an unknown situation, Lubrican posts some of his stories for free members for a short time before marking them Premium to encourage people to support the site financially. Banadin posts his books for free for a few weeks before removing them to put them on sale on Bookapy and Amazon.
Posting teasers ie: ten chapters on SOL and a note to buy the complete 20 chapter story on another website will get the author banned from SOL.. Site management has no tolerance for that.
Posting a complete story on SOL for free and a seperate sequel on Bookapy, Amazon, etc will not see the author banned.
It sucks to be in your situation, part way through and the story changes from free to Premium, at least you have the chance to buy it. Twice I've been almost to the end of very good stories and the author deleted their accounts. Poof! Story gone, never to be finished.

If I start reading a story and decide I like it, Download. For exactly that reason. It has only happened to me a few times but that was enough, and that is what Premier membership is for.

@Kaveman

Thanks for the responses. My main beef was that it was listed as free to read when I started it. It was a slow single chapter at a time release
I cannot see how it is allowed to change after being issued. This should be noted at the start. Just leaves a bad impression about the author.
On a related note, I don't understand why some stories require premium membership. Read what help I could find but did not see reference to this.

I don't understand why some stories require premium membership.

While it's the choice of the individual author on whether or not to put it on the premium side or not ... perhaps you've noticed that this site isn't bombarding you with all those click-bait ads. By paying for a premium membership, you get access to an increased number of stories per day and also help keep the site up and running.

Note that does NOT count those authors who have quit posting and been gone for several years, or those authors who are simply deceased. After five years of non-activity, their work is automatically put onto the premium side.

Actually, after N years of not visiting the site, where N is currently shrinking from 5 to 3. They could have posted a single story over a decade ago, but so long as they log in at least every couple of years, their story will remain non-premier, even if all they do is look at the home page.

ETA: There is a link, Up for Archival, which lists those stories about to be put behind the paywall, the link being on the main page left column, just above the label Links. Also on that page is a button giving you a list of all stories that are behind the paywall, slightly more than a fifth of the stories on the site.

And the contest entries are only in the Premier (not premium, btw) area until the contest ends and then put in the free area. Except the 3 winners. They stay in the Premier area for some time (I think 6 months) before moving to the free area.
