The story popped up today on the first page list of random stories.
The first sentence of the story is:"The sun was about to set and made a fitting back drop to the blackened hole peppered house in front of them."
I understand "The sun was about to set," but the rest of the sentence leaves me baffled. what is a "blackened hole peppered house"?
I'm sure somebody here can explain how I'm misreading this sentence to create a mystery when there really is no mystery.

Maybe it should have been written like this:

...though I don't like 'fitting', why is it fitting? Is it redolent of the recent flames? Why is it significant that it's in front of them? Is it supposed to be their next cover?
The angry red sky and setting sun were a mocking echo of the flames that had recently danced above their destination, now a soot-stained, bullet-riddles shell of the house that was to have been an observation post.

Might well mean that "The sun was about to set. That made a fitting backdrop for the house to the west of me/us. The house was peppered with blackened holes." It might mean something else, too.

I would interpret "hole peppered" in this context as implying full of bullet holes.
Blackened is ambiguous without more context. It could mean fire scorched or it could mean dark, as in without power for lights.
If it is fire scorched, it can't be too badly burned or you'd loose the bullet holes.

That's why you need to hyphenate certain words. It should be "hole-peppered" meaning it was peppered with holes.

In this case it was tidally locked black holes orbiting each other and spinning through the house.
I couldn't get past the title of the story. I had a flash image in my head of a mask wearing freak running amok in an adult toy store with a chainsaw.
Is it fair to give this story a 1-bomb without reading the codes?
No it's not. It's not a story I would read to begin with, as the title of the story alone is off-putting to me with or without codes. Therefore I wouldn't vote on it to begin with.
