Intemperance 3

i_like2_sail2 ๐Ÿšซ

Damn Al Steiner. A dollar a chapter? What is National Records setting the price? That is pretty damn steep. I guess I will never get to read volume 3. Hell it will cast 5 times what a hardback best seller would cost when complete. Enjoyed the first 2 volumes but not enough so ever pay that much to finish the story. Sorry

Al's chapters are long, so to say 5x a hardback price is silly. In fact, about 6 of his chapters add up to about the length of a typical published novel, so it would seem the price is just about 1x the cost of a paperback. If you don't want to support an author financially that's your prerogative, but this is an unfounded attack.

@Ryan Sylander

sorry but I have purchased novels from bookstore that were probably close to a thousand pages and they didn't even come close to a dollar a chapter. 5-10 bucks for an ebook is reasonable. Not a dollar a chapter for a book that could be 50 chapters long. And why would anyone be dumb enough to buy by the chapter? What if the author decides not to finish the book. Not saying this author would do that but sometimes books don't get finished

I really don't see what cost per chapter or cost per ebook has to do with it, unless you consider length. It's the actual words that take time to write, not setting up chapter splits or splitting books. So the real question is what is the cost per 100k words. Some novels have 10 chapters, some have 100, and yet both can be the same length. Intemperance3 has long chapters. If it does end up having 50 chapters, it will be the length of 8-10 novels. So by your own words, you would be ok with paying that, since the price per novel-length section is 5-7 bucks.

No. Price or rather an 'acceptable' price, is how it is perceived by the buyer. If the book ended up being 50 chapters, no matter how long, no one would pay 50 dollars to buy it. If possible it would probably be split up in multiple novels anyway. It's a high price for something that isn't finished yet with the uncertainty that it never will be finished. Personally I will never pay for something that isn't finished yet, I buy complete or I don't buy at all. When it's finished I determine how the price compares to my expectations, that's the price that matters and it's different for everyone.

I have no issue with differences in perception. But to put out false accusations that Intemperance will cost 5x a hardback (meaning $70-100) is unfounded.

That I agree with. We'll have to wait and see. It's possible that it will never be sold as a finished novel because supporters will see the price difference between per chapter and the complete novel. That might be too big a difference to continue paying by chapter.

no false accusations lets see the way the books are laid out on this site the first book is 30 chapters so this book would be 30.00 book two has 50 chapters so again 50.00. maybe the ebook being sold has the chapters not divided up in 1,1a,1b,1c format. Maybe it is just chapter one chapter two and so on so it would be normal. Again sorry you are butt hurt by my comment and are taking it personal

"maybe... maybe..."
You don't know how the chapters for book 3 are laid out, and you don't know how Patreon works, therefore you start a thread attacking an author for their chapter charges on Patreon. Makes sense now! I apologize for responding earlier, I did not understand where you were coming from. :)

Cheers

Well if 3 is like one and two than that book is going to cost more than any book I have ever purchased. You must be getting a kickback from the dollar a chapter price since you are defending it so much. And I never attacked the author I just started my opinion that I felt the price was excessive. Ihave not heard any comments from Al that i was attacking him. but you sure have a bug up your ass about it

"Well if 3 is like one and two" - After 12 chapters posted of I3, it's not the same at all. There's no 'if', and yet you keep on speculating.

"You must be getting a kickback" - Nope, not a cent, never have. Just a fan of Al's writing.

"I never attacked the author" - then what's the point of airing your alternate-reality 'opinion' on the price, rather than how it's actually priced?

"you sure have a bug up your ass" - nah. Just providing actual facts to offset your baseless speculations, first about the story price, and now about me.

What is National Records setting the price?

Is National Records the name of the site where the story is available (at whatever price)? If not, where is it?

Ryan Sylander ๐Ÿšซ

@PotomacBob

NR is one of the record companies in the story, including Books 1 & 2, which are on SOL. Book 3 is on Al's Patreon page.

@PotomacBob

LOL No National Records was the name of the record company in the books. They ripped off their artists like all record companies do. I was just making a joke

Are you refering to his Patreon?

Because if you do, he states:

"Intemperance III will be offered here exclusively, chapter by chapter, until complete.".

Maybe my English is failing me (not my native language), but to me that says he will release it elsewhere when it is finished. Maybe even for free on SOL.

And with the way Patreon works you get access to all previous posts (here: chapters) as soon as you pledge. So in essence you can sign up now, get access to all 11 chapters currently finished, cancel the pledge, pay the 1 dollar and repeat once you think it is worth it.

So I don't really see a problem with him asking people to pay him per chapter, if they are inclined.

I am not on Patreon and have never used it so I don't know how it works. But in the blog post on this site the author stated one dollar a chapter. I just thought that was excessive considering how many chapters the first 2 books are. So hey when the story is complete, if I can buy it for a dollar like you said and get all chapters great

helmut_meukel ๐Ÿšซ

Just for comparison:
"The Planet Pirates" (the 3 novels in one Trade Paperback edition) by Ann McCaffrey with Elizabeth Moon & Jody Lynn Nye; Baen Books, $15.00.
total 890 pages, 54 chapters, not available as ebook.
Each of the 3 novels as ebook $6.99 = $20.97

HM.

I'd treat it more like some authors who publish in serial format. Think Stephen King's Green Mile serial. I had some friends that bought it as the volumes came out. I waited until it was completed and published as a single book. They paid more in total than I did, but they also got it sooner.

The same logic could be applied here. Think of it as paying for the early release privilege. Or, you can wait until it's completed and determine at that time if you want to buy it (and hope that he's either got it for sale at a cost less than it is now per-chapter), wait to see if he releases it for free here, or skip it entirely.

gregwynn ๐Ÿšซ

It's a buck....about 2 or 3 dollars a month....book is great so far...
