About 'Merging' in Deja Vu Ascendancy

I've heard mixed reviews about Deja Vu Ascendancy, but I'm a sucker for long stories I can sink my teeth into so I thought I'd give it a try.

Thing is, except for some sexual squicks, the element I hate most in stories is cloning. Always hated it, I find that the main characters get... impersonal might be the best word, I don't know, I'm not a native English speaker.

Anyhow, I didn't even consider this when I started reading because merging is pretty much the opposite of cloning, when multiples become one. Thing is, they don't seem to really merge, there are (so far) 2 different conciousnesses in one body. And while not the same as cloning, it gives me the same feeling, like there are multiple versions of the main character.

So what I was wondering is, will the minds actually merge to form a single person, or is he going to keep adding a bunch of different minds and voices in his head like some kind of superschizophrenic? I wanted to keep reading to give it a chance since I assumed they would eventually merge into one mind, not just have a bunch of minds in one body. But then one of the versions of MC called their situation a 'merge' and this got me worried that this condition they are in now is as far as they are going to merge, and there's eventually going to be a 100 voices in his head debating over how to best flirt with a girl, and that thought has me kind of disturbed.. Kind of like having all your friends looking over your shoulder cheering you on while you're trying to get to know a girl, not to mention they being there when you're more intimate.

So yeah, does the story have one main character eventually, or does it always have multiple independent versions of him in his head all the time?

Yes and no. Later on in the story, he ends up talking primarily as just one character, but that's because he merges enough to literally become god. (Thus, the Ascendancy part of the title.)

And by that, I'm talking a god like 'Q' from Star Trek, able to create matter (AND duplicate living beings) from a thought.
