Is it AI or just my warped mind?

I have noticed a number of stories by different authors yet basically the same "Rags to Riches" setup with Asian names.

Makes me wonder if it is AI or just the same author using different names.

They're definitely machine translated, probably LLM-translated with a bit of localization from the prompt, and possibly fully LLM-generated?

I read a couple, they're somewhere at-or-below replacement level cultivation webnovels. If you really want to know if they're LLM generated you could dig up the raws and check publication date, but it would involve a lot of spelunking through Qidian or whatever and you probably don't want to care that much.

The fact that they all hit basically the same notes is not as damning of an indication as you might think; they're just extremely full of genre tropes, but the genre itself is pretty old. There are good examples of the genre, but they don't get posted here.

I'm convinced, with absolutely no supporting evidence Your Honor, that there is a sweat shop behind some run down laundry in Beijing that is mass producing those stories. They also have obviously AI produced videos with the same story lines. I guess P.T. Barnum was right: There is a sucker born every minute. And two to take him. They seem to be making money.

I wonder why they have started posting in volume of this site? I can't think the SOL audience would want to buy these stories?

I stumbled across one such story yesterday.

It perhaps was a good historical novel in the original setting - China, a thousand years ago.

However, the "author", probably named AI, simply replaced the Chinese names with 'Merican ones.

Reading it was like reading a book about life in medieval England, but where all the Kings were named "BillyBob" and "Bubba", and drove lifted trucks.

Kind'a trips you up, doesn't it?

None of the obvious social differences were taken into account. As an example, after #2 son is cheated out of his billion dollar inheritance, family counsels him to "kowtow" (their word) to older brother and apologize for complaining.

In 2026 Chicago, we don't apologize, we hire a hit man...
